Strategy’s $8.2bn quarterly loss exposes strain in bitcoin treasury model

Strategy, the listed company that made bitcoin accumulation its core corporate identity, reported an $8.2 billion loss for the second quarter of 2026, reversing a $10 billion profit posted a year earlier. The swing, driven almost entirely by unrealised losses on its bitcoin holdings, lands as spot prices trade in a tight consolidation band around $64,000, underscoring how exposed corporate treasury strategies built on bitcoin have become to prolonged price stagnation.

A treasury doctrine under pressure

According to the company’s own quarterly filing, bitcoin’s spot price finished the quarter more than 40% lower year-on-year, a decline that flowed directly into Strategy’s reported results given its accounting treatment of unrealised losses on digital assets. The firm had grown its bitcoin stack by 11% during the quarter, reaching a peak of 846,000 BTC, before shifting course into selective asset sales. Its most recent 8-K filing puts current holdings at 843,775 BTC.

Chief executive Phong Le said the firm had reduced convertible debt by 18% to $6.7 billion over the quarter while increasing its US dollar reserve by 12% to $2.4 billion — a deliberate move towards balance-sheet defensibility rather than further accumulation. Strategy has now paused bitcoin purchases for five consecutive weeks, removing one of the market’s most closely watched sources of institutional demand.

Price holds in a narrow range

Bitcoin itself has traded in a contested but relatively tight band through the period, with reported levels ranging between roughly $64,000 and $64,825 depending on the reporting window. Coinspeaker put the session low at $63,986 against an intraday high of $65,372, while Cryptonews flagged the $65,000 level as the key trigger for the next directional move.

Analysts cited by Coinspeaker, including Mudrex’s Akshat Siddhant, identify $60,000 as the critical support floor, below which a demand zone opens between $57,500 and $55,000. A prior session low near $59,100 already tested that resolve once. On the upside, immediate resistance is clustered between $64,500 and $65,000, the range bitcoin has struggled to clear in recent sessions.

Why it matters for institutional watchers

Strategy’s results offer a data point for a broader question facing corporate treasurers and institutional allocators: whether the leveraged bitcoin-accumulation model pioneered by the firm remains viable once price momentum stalls. A pause in purchases lasting five weeks, paired with debt reduction and a larger cash buffer, signals a more cautious posture from a company whose buying activity has historically been read as a bullish signal by the wider market.

For European institutional investors assessing exposure to corporate bitcoin treasuries, the quarter reinforces that unrealised mark-to-market losses can materially affect reported earnings even without a single coin being sold — a dynamic regulators and auditors are likely to scrutinise further as more listed firms adopt similar strategies.
