SpaceX’s $88 Bitcoin Test Transfer Revives Scrutiny of Corporate Treasury Disclosure

A minor wallet shuffle by newly listed SpaceX highlights how little outside investors can verify about corporate Bitcoin treasuries via on-chain data alone.

SpaceX’s $88 Bitcoin Test Transfer Revives Scrutiny of Corporate Treasury Disclosure

SpaceX has moved Bitcoin on-chain for the first time in six months, sending a test transaction worth roughly $88 between two of its tagged wallets, according to blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence. The transfer, from a legacy address labelled “15atF” to a newer “bc1q9” wallet, is minor in value but has drawn attention because such moves typically precede larger transfers as firms verify new addresses before shifting substantial holdings.

The episode is a modest one, but it lands at a moment when SpaceX’s Bitcoin exposure is under closer institutional watch than at any point in its history. The company completed its initial public offering on 12 June and has since joined the Nasdaq-100, placing its treasury decisions squarely within the purview of index-tracking funds and public-market analysts who previously had no visibility into its balance sheet.

A pattern of pre-transfer testing

SpaceX has used this method before. In October 2025, the company moved 2,495 BTC, worth approximately $257 million at the time, into two newly created wallets following a period of dormancy. That transfer itself followed an earlier movement of roughly $300 million in Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime custody in July 2025, a sequence that has made market participants unusually attentive to any renewed wallet activity from the firm’s tagged addresses.

Arkham flagged the latest transaction publicly, questioning whether it signals preparation for a more substantial transfer. There is currently no indication that SpaceX intends to liquidate its holdings. Data from BitcoinTreasuries shows the company still holding 18,712 BTC, unchanged from the figure disclosed in its 21 May S-1 filing ahead of the IPO.

Why on-chain tracking undercounts the real position

The episode has underscored a broader limitation in relying on blockchain analytics to assess corporate crypto exposure. Before the IPO filing, on-chain trackers had estimated SpaceX’s Bitcoin holdings at roughly 8,285 BTC. The S-1 disclosure revealed an additional 10,427 BTC that had not been linked to any publicly identified wallet, meaning Arkham’s labelled addresses account for only a fraction of the company’s total treasury.

That gap matters for investors now assessing SpaceX as a listed entity. Governance over any future accumulation or disposal remains concentrated: Elon Musk is expected to retain more than 85% of the company’s ownership, meaning strategic decisions about the Bitcoin treasury sit largely outside the reach of minority shareholders or index-linked funds tracking the stock through its Nasdaq-100 inclusion.

Valuation context

Bitcoin was trading near $62,060 at the time of the transaction, well below its October peak of $126,080, putting SpaceX’s disclosed reserve at approximately $1.2 billion. For now, the small transfer looks more consistent with routine custodial housekeeping than an imminent sale, though market participants will continue to monitor the new wallet for further movements that might point to a broader restructuring of the company’s Bitcoin holdings.
