There is a particular kind of confidence that comes from having already done the thing everyone else is still promising to do. In 2014, most of the crypto world was busy arguing about whether digital money could ever work at all. Jed McCaleb, who had already co-founded one exchange and one payments protocol, was quietly building a second network designed to move value across borders as easily as a text message crosses a phone screen. He called it Stellar, and unlike much of what followed in the years after, it was not really aimed at speculators.

That distinction has aged oddly. Stellar has spent a decade positioning itself as infrastructure rather than spectacle — the plumbing beneath remittances, tokenised assets and central bank digital currency pilots, rather than the headline act. Whether infrastructure can also be a compelling investment, or whether the two ambitions quietly work against each other, is a question the network has never entirely settled.

The story so far

McCaleb’s earlier project was Ripple, and the split between the two says a great deal about Stellar’s founding temperament. Disagreements over Ripple’s direction, particularly its coziness with banks and its centralised issuance model, pushed McCaleb to strike out on his own. He took with him a conviction that a payments network should serve the unbanked as readily as the banked, and in 2014 he launched Stellar with backing from Stripe and the guidance of a young lawyer named Joyce Kim, who became the Stellar Development Foundation’s first executive director.

The early code borrowed heavily from Ripple’s, which led to an uncomfortable public rift and, briefly, legal tension between the two camps. Stellar’s response was to rebuild its consensus mechanism from scratch. The result, published in 2015, was the Stellar Consensus Protocol, a federated Byzantine agreement system that let the network reach agreement without a single mining race or a closed validator club. It was an academically serious piece of work, and it gave Stellar a technical identity distinct from its rival, even if the two networks would spend years being confused for one another by outsiders.

What followed was less a single dramatic turning point than a series of patient institutional courtships. IBM adopted Stellar’s rails for a cross-border payments initiative called World Wire. Ukraine’s government explored it for digital hryvnia pilots. MoneyGram, for a period, ran remittance settlement through the network before pulling back as the broader crypto payments market cooled. None of these partnerships transformed Stellar into a household name, but collectively they built a reputation as a network that institutions were willing to actually test, rather than merely admire from a distance.

Today the network counts nearly 34 billion XLM in circulation against a hard cap of just over 50 billion, a supply schedule that was itself rewritten in 2019 when the Foundation burned more than half the tokens then outstanding, arguing that the original allocation no longer matched the network’s actual needs. It was an unusual act of self-restraint in an industry not known for it, and it remains one of the more concrete demonstrations of Stellar’s stated priorities.

The case for Stellar

Believers point first to the engineering discipline. The Stellar Consensus Protocol allows transactions to settle in a matter of seconds for fractions of a cent, without the energy overhead of proof-of-work or the concentrated validator power of some proof-of-stake designs. For a network whose stated purpose is moving small sums of money across borders cheaply, that combination of speed, cost and reasonably distributed trust is precisely the specification one would design toward.

The second argument is about who Stellar has chosen to work with. Rather than chasing retail hype cycles, the Foundation has spent years in conversations with central banks, NGOs and payments firms, and the network’s tokenisation tooling has found genuine use in stablecoin issuance, including a notable partnership around a regulated dollar-pegged token. For those who believe crypto’s lasting value lies in quietly rebuilding financial plumbing rather than in speculative trading, Stellar’s low-drama persistence looks less like stagnation and more like patience.

There is also the matter of governance culture. A non-profit foundation, a public burn of unneeded supply, and a consistent emphasis on financial inclusion in the developing world give Stellar a mission-driven texture that some investors find reassuring, whatever one thinks of its market performance.

The case against Stellar

Sceptics note that mission statements do not settle transactions, and that Stellar’s list of institutional flirtations has not translated into the scale of throughput that would justify the network’s ambitions. MoneyGram’s eventual retreat from its Stellar-based product stung precisely because it had been held up as proof of concept. Partnerships announced with fanfare have a habit of quietly fading from press releases a year or two later.

There is also the awkward proximity to Ripple, a comparison Stellar has never quite shaken. Both promise fast, cheap cross-border settlement; both have spent a decade courting the same institutional customers; and critics reasonably ask why the world needs two such networks rather than one, with Stellar frequently cast as the smaller, less commercially aggressive sibling. Token economics draw scrutiny too. A very large maximum supply, even after the 2019 burn, leaves plenty of room for dilution, and the token’s price history, including a spike toward its all-time high near ninety-four cents during the 2018 mania, has done little since to suggest the market prices Stellar as essential infrastructure rather than a speculative instrument that occasionally catches a payments-adjacent narrative.

Finally, there is the harder question of whether blockchains are even the right tool for the cross-border payments problem Stellar set out to solve, given how much progress traditional rails and newer fintech networks have made without needing a token at all.

The bottom line

Stellar remains one of crypto’s more sober experiments, a network built by people who wanted to solve a specific, unglamorous problem and have largely resisted the temptation to overpromise on the way. With a market capitalisation sitting around $6.8 billion, it is neither an afterthought nor a dominant force, and its decade of institutional courtship has produced genuine but uneven results. Whether patient infrastructure-building eventually outlasts flashier rivals, or simply gets quietly overtaken by them, is not a question this essay can answer.
