There is a particular kind of pitch that recurs throughout crypto’s short history: the idea that some coming wave of automation will need its own economy, and that whoever builds the plumbing first will be rewarded handsomely. Fetch.ai belongs to that lineage. Its founders imagined a world thick with autonomous software agents — booking your parking space, haggling over energy tariffs, rebalancing a supply chain — all transacting quietly among themselves without waiting for a human to click approve. It is a seductive image, not least because so much of modern life already feels like it is being run by algorithms we never asked to trust.
What makes Fetch.ai worth a closer look is not that the idea is unique, but that it arrived early, with credible technical backing, and has stubbornly refused to disappear even as the market’s attention moved elsewhere. Whether that persistence reflects genuine substance or simply the long half-life of a well-marketed narrative is precisely the question this essay sets out to weigh, without pretending to settle it.
The story so far
Fetch.ai emerged from Cambridge in 2017, founded by Humayun Sheikh alongside a team that included researchers with genuine machine-learning credentials rather than the more familiar crypto-founder profile of marketers and financiers. The pitch from the outset was unusually specific for the era: a decentralised network populated by autonomous economic agents, each capable of discovering, negotiating and transacting with one another, underpinned by a blockchain designed to handle the coordination problem at scale. It raised funds through an initial coin offering in 2019, at a moment when the ICO boom was already souring, and used the proceeds to build out what it called the Open Economic Framework.
The project’s turning points have tended to track the broader artificial intelligence narrative rather than crypto cycles proper. Early attention focused on unglamorous but plausible use cases — optimising parking in smart cities, smoothing energy grid demand, coordinating logistics — trialled in partnership with corporates including Bosch. These were modest, proof-of-concept affairs, useful for credibility but unlikely to move markets on their own.
The more consequential shift came in 2023, when Fetch.ai joined forces with SingularityNET and Ocean Protocol to form the Artificial Superintelligence Alliance, merging their tokens and pooling resources under a shared ambition to build what they described as an open alternative to the AI infrastructure controlled by a handful of large technology firms. The merger, completed through 2024, was as much a statement of narrative intent as a technical consolidation, arriving just as generative AI had become the dominant story in technology and investors were hunting for tokens that could plausibly claim a stake in it.
Today FET commands a market capitalisation of roughly $418 million, with some 2.25 billion tokens in circulation against a maximum supply of just under 2.72 billion, a structure that leaves meaningful further issuance still to come. The token’s all-time high, set during the exuberance that followed the alliance announcement, reached $3.47 — a level that now stands as a reminder of how quickly sentiment inflated around the AI-crypto crossover, and how far it has since retreated.
The case for Fetch.ai
The strongest argument in Fetch.ai’s favour is that it identified a real coordination problem before most of the industry had a name for it. As software agents become genuinely capable of independent action, thanks to advances in large language models, something has to arbitrate access, payment and trust between them, and doing that atop existing centralised platforms recreates precisely the gatekeeping that decentralisation was meant to avoid. Fetch.ai’s proposition, that agents need a native economic layer rather than a bolted-on one, remains logically coherent even if its execution is unproven.
The Superintelligence Alliance also gives believers a broader thesis to lean on: that combining Fetch.ai’s agent infrastructure with SingularityNET’s decentralised AI marketplace and Ocean’s data-sharing tools creates something more formidable than any one project alone, an open-source counterweight to the concentrated AI power of a few Silicon Valley giants. For those who find that concentration troubling on principle, the alliance’s ambition has a certain moral clarity to it, whatever one makes of the technical odds.
Finally, there is the matter of survival. Fetch.ai has weathered a full market cycle, a token merger, and several waves of AI hype without collapsing into irrelevance, which is more than can be said for most projects that launched alongside it in 2017 and 2019.
The case against Fetch.ai
Sceptics point, reasonably, to the gap between the vision and the visible evidence of use. Years after the smart parking and energy grid pilots were announced, it remains difficult to identify a genuinely large-scale, revenue-generating deployment that depends on Fetch.ai’s infrastructure rather than a conventional cloud stack. Narrative and technology in this space have a habit of outrunning adoption, and it is fair to ask how many of the agents supposedly populating this economy are performing meaningful economic work versus how many exist chiefly in demonstrations and documentation.
There is also the question of whether blockchain is the right substrate at all for agent coordination, given that much of the heavy computation in modern AI happens off-chain in any case, with the token’s role reduced to settlement and incentive design rather than anything load-bearing. Critics further note that the Superintelligence Alliance, whatever its philosophical appeal, folds together three projects with quite different technical roots and communities, and mergers of that kind have historically been easier to announce than to make operationally seamless.
The token’s own arithmetic adds another layer of caution: with meaningful supply still to be issued against a circulating base already north of two billion tokens, and a price sitting far below its 2024 peak, the burden of proof for sustained demand growth rests squarely on adoption materialising rather than narrative alone sustaining valuation.
