There is a particular kind of confidence required to tell the rest of the industry that it has been building things backwards. Celestia’s founders had that confidence in abundance. Their pitch was not another faster chain, nor another marketplace for digital trinkets, but a quieter and more structural claim: that blockchains had, since Bitcoin’s genesis block, been trying to do too many jobs at once, and that separating those jobs would prove more valuable than optimising any single one of them.
It is an argument that appeals to engineers before it appeals to speculators, which is itself unusual in an industry where the reverse is normally true. To understand why anyone bothered, it helps to sit for a moment with the problem Celestia claims to solve: the way a single blockchain has traditionally had to execute transactions, order them, and guarantee that the data behind them is available to anyone who wants to check the sums, all within one tightly coupled system. Celestia’s wager is that unbundling these functions, starting with data availability, changes what is possible for everything built on top.
Whether that wager pays off is, inevitably, the question this essay circles without quite answering. What follows is an attempt to lay out how Celestia got here, what its believers see in it, and why its doubters remain unmoved.
The story so far
Celestia’s origins lie not in a whitepaper written for headlines but in a research paper, LazyLedger, published in 2019 by Mustafa Al-Bassam, a cryptographer who had cut his teeth on the LazyLedger idea while completing a doctorate at University College London. Al-Bassam’s earlier life included a stint with the hacking collective LulzSec as a teenager, an origin story the crypto press has never tired of retelling, though it says rather less about his subsequent work than the coverage implies. The core insight of that 2019 paper was modest in its scope but ambitious in its implications: a blockchain does not need to execute smart contracts itself if its only job is to guarantee that data has been published and is available for others to verify.
The idea gathered collaborators, funding, and a new name. LazyLedger became Celestia, and the project attracted backing from some of the more research-inclined corners of crypto venture capital, alongside a growing community of developers drawn to the modular thesis at a time when Ethereum’s own scaling roadmap was leaning increasingly on rollups, and rollups needed somewhere cheap and reliable to post their data.
The mainnet launched in October 2023, arriving with the kind of anticipation usually reserved for infrastructure projects that have spent years being discussed in the abstract before anyone can actually use them. The token generation event and subsequent airdrop to early testnet participants and community members marked the point at which Celestia stopped being a research agenda and became, for better or worse, a market. Its price found early enthusiasm, climbing toward its all-time high of just under 21 dollars within months of listing, a level that has since receded into the sort of distant memory that most tokens accumulate rather than escape.
Since then, Celestia has settled into the harder, less glamorous work of being actual infrastructure: courting rollup teams, refining its data availability sampling technique, and competing with a growing field of rivals who noticed the same gap in the market and have been racing to fill it ever since.
The case for Celestia
The believers’ argument rests on a simple observation about how blockchain scaling has actually evolved rather than how it was originally imagined. Rollups, the technique by which Ethereum and others hope to process far more transactions without compromising security, need somewhere to post their transaction data cheaply and verifiably. Celestia offers to be that place, specialising ruthlessly in data availability rather than trying to be a general-purpose settlement layer competing directly with the chains it hopes to serve.
There is also something appealing, to those who find it appealing, in the modular thesis as a broader worldview: the idea that blockchain architecture should mirror the internet’s own layered protocols, with specialised components doing one thing well rather than monolithic systems trying to do everything adequately. Proponents point to the sheer number of rollups and app-chains that have chosen to build atop Celestia as evidence that developers, at least, find the pitch credible, and that a market capitalisation of roughly 339 million dollars, spread across a circulating supply of some 920 million TIA tokens, reflects a project still early in proving out a genuinely novel piece of infrastructure rather than one that has already peaked.
The case against Celestia
The sceptics’ rebuttal begins with a question that modular architecture has yet to answer convincingly: does unbundling blockchain functions actually create more value than it destroys through added complexity and fragmented liquidity. Critics note that Ethereum’s own rollup ecosystem has developed alternative, and in some cases cheaper, solutions for data availability, blunting Celestia’s differentiation before it has fully established itself. There is also the uncomfortable reality that the token’s price trajectory since its high-profile launch has been unforgiving, a pattern common enough across the sector but no less telling for it, and one that raises fair questions about whether early enthusiasm outran the pace at which real usage has actually materialised.
Beyond price, there is a more structural worry: that being infrastructure for other chains, rather than a destination in itself, makes Celestia’s value difficult to capture directly, dependent as it is on decisions made by rollup teams who could, in principle, choose competitors or build their own solutions instead. Whether the modular thesis proves durable or merely a fashionable detour on the road to scaling remains, quite genuinely, unresolved.
The bottom line
Celestia occupies an unusual position for a token this size: it is simultaneously a genuine research contribution to how blockchains might be built and a market asset subject to all the ordinary pressures of sentiment, unlock schedules, and competitive erosion. Those two identities do not always move in the same direction, and much of the disagreement between believers and sceptics comes down to which one they think matters more over the long run.
