A stablecoin known as Balance Coin lost nearly all of its value on 22 July 2026 after attackers exploited a price oracle to drain the Bitcoin-backed vaults underpinning its peg, according to reporting by CryptoDaily. The token fell by around 99%, and the exploiter is understood to have extracted approximately $912,000 from the protocol.
The incident adds to a growing catalogue of failures in which decentralised finance protocols relying on external price feeds have been manipulated to misrepresent collateral values, allowing attackers to withdraw assets far in excess of what their positions warranted.
How oracle manipulation undermines a peg
Stablecoins that maintain their value through collateralised vaults, rather than fiat reserves held at a bank, depend heavily on oracles to report accurate, real-time prices for the assets locked inside those vaults. When an oracle can be manipulated or fed corrupted data, the entire mechanism that keeps the token pegged to its target value is put at risk.
